An article in Fabric Architecture Jan/Feb edition -BY Mason Riddle Entering Melbourne’s Federation Square through an oddly shaped opening that pierces a giant inflatable wall must be something akin to Alice tumbling down the rabbit hole. But unlike Alice, where home turf is no longer visible after her fall, visitors to Fed Square, (as it is referred to locally), can keep an eye on the exterior world from the inside through the transparent structure. Fed Square is a sprawling complex or “cultural precinct” comprising art galleries, a museum, auditoria, cinemas, cafes, bars and retail all organized around two public spaces, one covered and one open to the sky. As civic-minded as the space is, it is not functional all 12 months of the year. The challenge? How to close off the entrance to the atrium area during the winter months in order to make the space more efficient and user-friendly. Giant Inflatables [ 1300inflate ], an Australian company, recently won an IFAI Achievement Award for its

The Ezyshelter 6050 is here at last. The test drive of this portable, profit-making centre is Lee Kynaston, owner of Eco Sodablast, a company that does on-site cleaning of anything from graffiti to boat antifouling. It’s a remarkable inflatable shelter that has a huge internal space, and clean and business-like lines. As a portable inflatable shelter for a savvy operator of remote or site services, there is nothing quite like it on the market. The designers have put a lot of thought into how one person can erect this by remote inflation and then easily pack it away. The cavernous internal space is well illuminated and the long side windows are positioned at just the right height to offer privacy and a high level of direct light. While the view of the blue sky makes it feel even more airy than it is. Optional extras include clear doors for even greater internal light as well as an easy loading trolley that makes packing onto a ute or van a simple, no-strength ope

Inflatable Wall at Federation Square

Image
With the increasing awareness and urgency for becoming energy efficient, the administration at Federation Square took the next step in bringing the heating costs of the atrium under control by commissioning Giant Inflatables to add an additional section to the inflatable wall that we build 3 years ago. The design brief was again to reflect the geometry of the building and to snuggly fit the removable inflatable wall to the existing structure to reduce the cold air draft that winter brings with it. It was a pleasure working with Peter Brace, of Federation Square Management who went out of his way to make sure that everything was ready for our team to perform the inflatable wall installation in a comfortable and hassle-free environment. Thanks.
